Feverish and unconscious, he is unable to keep meds down until Kate gives it a try. Holding him, kissing his forehead, and stroking his hair, Kate manages to get him to take his antibiotics and help break his deadly fever.
Relieved by his recovery, Kate continues to nurse Sawyer back to health throughout the rest of the episode.
She sticks close by his side and even helps him go on walks as the medication does its job and his strength slowly returns. Nothing brings a couple closer than being kidnapped by a group of mysterious, island bad guys.
Captured by the Others, Sawyer and Kate are kept in separate cages and forced into hard labor, but that doesn't keep the passion from sizzling. Unable to help himself, Sawyer spontaneously drops his tools and swoops Kate into a deep, romantic kiss. However, it turned out that he was trying to come up with an escape plan. Unfortunately, he is forced to back down when Juliet threatens Kate, which results in him earning a swift beating from their captors.
Later, they share an intimate moment, when Sawyer admits to her that his real name is James. Kate sobs and frantically begs for him to stop as she holds Sawyer and attempts to comfort him. Pickett refuses until Kate admits that she loves him, and walks away, leaving Sawyer a bloody mess. Though some fans assume this was simply a spur of the moment lie to save Sawyer's life, it wouldn't be unlike Kate - a stubborn, runaway with abandonment issues - to need a life and death situation to admit her true feelings.
However, this all changes by "I Do" when the two finally give in to their feelings. She retorts that she only said that to get Pickett to stop hitting him, but returns to her cage, apparently unwilling to leave without him.
In the morning, two of the Others, including Pickett, charge in to go after Sawyer. He declines to fight for his life, because they threaten Kate if he tries. Kates begs for Sawyer's life as Pickett threatens to execute him, and Sawyer tells Kate to close her eyes. Although they have a clear connection and flirt throughout the entire series, the actual acknowledged relationship between Sawyer and Kate began during " I Do " and ended at the end of " There's No Place Like Home, Part 3 ".
Off island, Kate and Sawyer were both criminals. Kate was on the run, and Sawyer was a con-artist. Their characteristics are similar, and this immediately draws them together. In the beginning of the series, Kate was not interested in Sawyer. But after she got to know him, she really started to like him. Mostly because of the similarities between their personalities and the impulsive and flirtatious way Sawyer behaved towards her, of which Jack is the opposite.
Sawyer even gave one to Kate… sort of. It was actually a Phil Collins one he stole from Bernard, but still, this was a very cute scene. It was also one of the ones that proved there was more to Sawyer than shaggy hair, sarcastic replies, and con-man ways. Jack and Kate. Jack and Juliet.
Sawyer and Kate. Sawyer and Juliet. There were some complicated ties on The Island, and these four couples sure brought the drama. There was so much buildup, but everyone knew that something romantic would eventually happen. Oh, and last but not least, back in the cages… Kate and Sawyer more than kissed. It was one of the most stand-out scenes on the show. And in the midst of dealing with The Others, a smoke monster , being stuck in a strange place, and so on, it was nice to have such a juicy distraction!
